FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Kuhlman Cellars Awarded Two Gold and Three Silver Medals by Concours International de Lyon Wine Competition
Only nine medals were awarded to US wineries.

Stonewall, Texas – May 29, 2020 – Kuhlman Cellars is thrilled to share five of their wines won medals at the renowned wine competition Concours de Lyon. Kuhlman Cellars’ 2018 Estate Kuhlmanation White and 2018 Texas High Plains Viognier both won gold medals and the 2016 Reserve Merlot, 2017 Marl, and 2017 Texas High Plains (Newsom Vineyards) Sangiovese won silver.
“It seems we are going full circle: from a small appellation of Condrieu that made Viognier, a wild variety from France, famous all around the world, to Bingham Family Vineyards, a pioneer in the High Plains of Texas who planted Viognier in the millennium to the 2020 Concours International de Lyon competition,” says Kuhlman Cellars Winemaker Bénédicte Rhyne. “In 2018 the stars aligned with a beautiful growing season, allowing us to harvest this finicky variety at prime maturity, high Brix of 26. Our cellar crew then carefully handled the grapes to produce this magnificent vintage. What and honor to be recognized by our peers, the French sommeliers and winemakers from Lyon who know best what a great Viognier should taste like.”
This year the Concours de Lyon judges tasted over six thousand samples, awarding only nine medals to United States wineries. “This is very exciting for us,” enthuses Kuhlman Cellars co-founder Chris Cobb. “Many of our grapes are French in origin. To win gold with Texas wines in the grapes’ ancestral homeland is an honor.”
The Estate Kuhlmanation White is a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, grown on the estate in Stonewall, Texas.  These vines were planted in 2015 and the 2018 is only the second vintage released. Vineyard Manager Diane Cobb says, “We put a lot of love in the care of the vineyard with exacting labor and attention to detail to ensure we grow the best possible fruit.  It’s amazing to receive such recognition from professionals who’ve grown these grapes for generations.”
Only seven cases remain of Kuhlman Cellars’ award-winning 2018 Viognier. Insulated shipping is included with online purchases over $89. Kuhlman Cellars is offering a variety of virtual wine tasting events, complimentary with wine bundle purchases. For more information, visit kuhlmancellars.com.
