What is Dressage?

Dressage is an English style of riding with a rich history of ancient European warhorses. Today, dressage competitions test how well a horse is trained. According to the International Equestrian Federation, dressage is the “highest expression of horse training” and aims to develop a horse’s natural athletic ability. While dressage benefits all breeds of horse, the most popular breeds seen at the Olympics and other high-level competitions are warmblood horses bred specifically for dressage.

About Black Star Sport Horses

Owned by Jackie and Lisa Blackmon, Black Star Sport Horses is a premier dressage training, show, and sales facility located on 255 acres just twenty minutes east of Dallas. Jackie grew up training young horses in Fort Worth and has since won over 40 USDF Championships. Lisa has spent her life training and competing on international sport horses, even training seven Grand Prix horses. Together Jackie and Lisa run a program dedicated to helping each horse reach its full potential. For more information, visit www.blackstarsporthorses.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Vintage Tex Now Part of Retro Plaza
The vintage clothing store’s mini Bedford boutique is inside The Vintage Freak.

Grapevine, Texas – August 23, 2017 – Vintage Tex today announces an expansion: the Grapevine clothing store has opened a mini boutique in the Bedford shopping center known as Retro Plaza. Vintage Tex is the fifth vintage specialty shop to be part of Retro Plaza located at 1424 Brown Trl, Bedford, TX. “I love the variety of vintage goodies available at Retro Plaza,” says Jen Cooper, the owner of Vintage Tex, “but I love the ‘vintage’ way they do business even more – five little mom and pop shops, all helping each other out, to serve a really unique customer base. It’s almost like a 1960s-style co-op.” The five Retro Plaza businesses are:

  • The Vintage Freak– record shop that sells and repairs vintage audio equipment and mid-century modern furniture
  • Vintage Tex– vintage clothing and accessories from the 1940s to 1970s
  • Bombshell Nostalgia– strange, rare, and interesting oddities, militaria, taxidermy, and antiques
  • Retro Madness– vintage toys, action figures, comics, collectibles, and retro gaming systems such as Atari and Nintendo
  • Quarter Lounge– a retro arcade specializing in the best games from the 1980s and 1990s such as Ms. Pacman, Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, and more

“I was so excited when Taylor Watts, the owner of The Vintage Freak, called and asked if we would be interested in taking over their clothing area,” says Cooper. Prior to opening the new mini boutique, Vintage Tex cleared out the formerly cluttered clothing room, painted the space their signature grey with a pop of coral, installed sophisticated black track lighting, and added a dressing room. Vintage Tex recently renovated their Grapevine flagship store with the same color scheme.

Vintage Tex is carrying a small selection of clothing and accessories made between the 1940s and the 1970s inside The Vintage Freak in Retro Plaza. The Vintage Freak is open from 12pm-6pm Monday-Friday & Sunday, and 12pm-9pm on Saturday. The same attention to quality will be met at the new boutique as in the original Vintage Tex store in Grapevine; all items are examined for flaws, repaired and cleaned when possible, and then sized to the modern size and steamed to make shopping easier.

Vintage Tex representatives are available for interviews regarding this news. Contact Katherine Rose Watson (katierosewatson@yahoo.com, 972-489-7694) to coordinate.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Ludwig and Marglin Leather Joins New Braunfels Ghost Tour
A ghost named Red haunts the 79 year-old leather shop.

Ludwig and Marglin Leather

The team circa 1938

New Braunfels, Texas – August 9, 2017 – Ludwig and Marglin Leather today announces that the store is now part of the New Braunfels Ghost Tours Pub Crawl. The first Pub Crawl including Ludwig and Marglin will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017. Originally called New Braunfels Leather Company, Ludwig & Marglin Leather (197 S. Sequin Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130) has seventy-nine years of history and a resident ghost named Red who is said to haunt the leather store.

Red Miller worked at Ludwig and Marglin for about a decade around the 1970s before passing away from a heart attack. It’s unknown where Red is buried. Now his spirit is said to hang around the shop, occasionally tossing leather pieces around and rattling the rope cow halters he loved making in life. Red could even be the reason for the mysterious Ludwig and Marglin fire of 1982. Helen Opellt, who has worked at the shop for over thirty years, says she’s witnessed some of Red’s antics herself. “He doesn’t like it when I make the cow halters,” she says. “That was his favorite project.”

Ludwig and Marglin Leather

The Ludwig and Marglin tannery that burned down

Paula Cerna told many tales of Red and would always say, “That was Red, alright!” when mysterious things happened around the shop. Paul worked at Ludwig and Marglin Leather for over fifty years before passing away. Paul’s marble Ludwig and Marglin tooling block was made into his tombstone, per his request. “With seventy-nine years of history, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if we had a ghost around the shop,” says Ludwig and Marglin owner Terri Cocanougher. “Luckily for us, Red is a friendly ghost.”

Tickets to the New Braunfels Haunted Pub Crawl are $30 and can be purchased at nbghosttours.com. Ludwig and Marglin’s first Haunted Pub Crawl will take place on Saturday, August 19, 2017 from 6-9 pm. The tour meets at The Lone Star Lounge at 5:30 pm. The Haunted Pub Crawl visits five bars in downtown New Braunfels. Participants will hear tales of each bar before they enter as well as true happenings from events long ago in our town. Participants must be at least 21 years old. For more information, visit nbghosttours.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Ludwig and Marglin Leather Shop Remodels After 79 Years
The custom leather manufacturing shop gently steps into the 21st century while honoring its history.

Ludwig and Marglin Leather

New Braunfels, Texas – July 24, 2017 – Ludwig and Marglin Leather today announces that the beloved leather shop has a new layout. For seventy-nine years, the custom leather manufacturing shop located in historic downtown New Braunfels (197 S. Sequin Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130) has been a staple of the farm and ranch community in Central Texas. Originally called New Braunfels Leather Company, new name Ludwig & Marglin honors the rich history of two founding families of New Braunfels, TX. The new store layout opened the once small retail outlet to the production floor and invites the community to see the fascinating manufacturing process.

Ludwig and Marglin Leather

“I remember being a young girl in New Braunfels and walking into Ludwig and Marglin to get supplies for my horse,” new owner Terri Cocanougher says. “It was a privilege to be able to go into the back of the shop where the crafters were working to pull from the saddle maker’s hardware. You had to know someone to be allowed in the back. It made you feel special somehow. We want everyone who visits us to feel that special.”

The store has had a recent facelift to open up the space and make it friendlier for the New Braunfels foot traffic.  So open in fact that people can actually watch the crafters while they shop, the smell of the leather permeating the whole stop as the artisans design, draw, cut, tool and sew on the leather making equipment. Some of the equipment has been in the shop since it’s opening in 1938. Cocanougher is careful to explain that the major goal was to maintain the time-honored tradition of manufacturing top quality leather goods by experienced craftsmen.  Most of the crafters have been with the shop for many years; Helen and Al Oppelt have worked for Ludwig and Marglin leather for over 65 years combined! Cocanougher says, “That type of experience you can’t simply hire from the want ads. These two individuals are simply priceless!”

The bulk of the shop features leather bags, briefcases, belts, horse tack, saddle-maker’s supplies, and leather crafting supplies. The front of the store now has German biersteins, Lederhosen & Dirndl T-shirts, Texas-themed gifts, and artwork by local artists.  Old photos from the first few years of the shop, including photos of the original tannery that dates back to 1933, hang framed all around.  “I fell in love with the people that were working in the shop as much as the history of the shop,” says Cocanougher. “It is important for folks to be able to step back to a time when American-made products were valued and easier to come by. If you haven’t stopped by Ludwig & Marglin in years, we hope you’ll come see the updated store and enjoy our little piece of history.”

Cocanougher’s ranching experience through the years continues to insure the integrity of the products sold in the business where master crafters make quality ranch gear, horse tack, hosters, scabbards, whips and ropes. Cocanougher says, “As a lifelong equestrian, I understand the need for quality equipment firsthand and can help you find or build what you need.”

Cocanougher is also updating an equestrian facility near New Braunfes that she expects to open as a picturesque AirBNB later this year. “Marglin Ranch will provide a wonderful place to unplug from the stresses of the city,” says Cocanougher.  The ranch has facilities to comfortably house 15 horses, a large covered riding arena and several miles of riding trails throughout the ranch.  Future information will be posted at www.MarglinRanch.com.
